چکیده

The mechanism behind the Long Secondary Period (LSP) observed in pulsating red giants still remains unknown. In this work, I investigate connection between Red Giant Branch and Asymptotic evolution appearance of LSP - phenomenon a large fraction giants. use OGLE-III sample OSARG variables Large Magellanic Cloud. construct density maps period-luminosity as well color-magnitude planes for stars showing compare them to remaining also fit spectral energy distribution test whether an additional source reddening is present stars. post hypothesis that may be related transition different pulsation sequences. show overabundance Variables can around Tip Branch, much more prominently, at upper part Branch. main over-density region appears slightly fainter redder than bulk It seems correspond area Hertzsprung-Russell diagram where stable winds high mass loss are present. possibly recurring appearing disappearing various points giant evolution. appear reddened other giants, which suggests intrinsic nature reddening, likely dust emission. analysis confirms there relation due presence strong stellar wind LSP.

Long Secondary Periods and Binarity in Red Giant Stars

Observational arguments supporting the binary explanation of the long secondary periods (LSP) phenomenon in red giants are presented. Photometry of about 1200 semiregular variables with the LSP in the Large Magellanic Cloud are analyzed using the MACHO and OGLE photometry. For about 5% of these objects additional ellipsoidal-like or eclipsing-like modulation with the same periods as the LSP is ...

Uncertainties in Red Giant Branch Evolution : The Red Giant Branch

A Monte Carlo simulation exploring uncertainties in standard stellar evolution theory on the red giant branch of metal-poor globular clusters has been conducted. Confidence limits are derived on the absolute V -band magnitude of the bump in the red giant branch luminosity function (MV,b) and the excess number of stars in the bump, Rb. The analysis takes into account uncertainties in the primord...

Ellipsoidal Variability and Long Secondary Periods in Macho Red Giant Stars

We present a period-luminosity-amplitude analysis of 5899 red giant and binary stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, using publicly available observations of the MACHO project. For each star, we determined new periods, which were double-checked in order to exclude aliases and false periods. The period-luminosity relations confirm the existence of a short-period, small-amplitude P–L sequence at p...
